Goal(s) for Class

  • How do prepare to plan our units: Engaging Students.

Activities

  • Sharing
    • What did you think of the NPR report on students' academic struggles?
    • What are you seeing in your placements?
  • How can I avoid playing the GOS?
  • Activity 2: How might I jazz up my unit?
    • What are some interesting aspects of my topic?
  • Activity 3: Unit Exploration and Layout
    • Strategies, tools, and techniques for planning engaging units.

Homework

  • Due Saturday: Observe/Reflect #6:
  • Llewellyn, Ch 1 - (pdf on URITK)
  • Due next week:
    • Create a graphical representation of your unit. This could be a map, a planning grid, or some other visualization. The purpose of this representation is to communicate at a glance both the topic and the engaging nature of your unit.
    • Write your plans for one scientific investigation that you will include in your unit. This investigation may span several days, so you may need to write a unit plan for each day.
  • Announcement: Dr. Kern will hold a Unit Planning Workshop next week in the CML from 2:00 to 6:00.
